Lone Eagle Peak

Finally after 3 years of wanting to go here, myself and a crew of 3 others made the 10 mile trek back to the remote side of the Indian Peaks Wilderness to see what might be the most beautiful spot in Colorado, Lone Eagle Peak.

The first day was a rain disaster - the last kind of weather you want to see when you're hiking 10 miles into the middle of nowhere.  It started out as rain, and as we got above tree line and up to 12,600 ft it turned into a full out blizzard of blowing snow and ice.  We made it to the campsite 6 hours later and it began to clear up... but only long enough for us to take our tents out of our backpacks, then the dump.  Before any of us could set up out tents and get our gear out of the elements... it began to pour... and pour and pour!  Soaking all of our gear, our sleeping bags, tents, everything.  We prepared for a very cold - dark and wet night.  Temperatures dropped into the 30's and our only source of warmth (sleeping bags) were soaking wet.  Around 10 PM the rain let up just enough to go out and cook up a dehydrated meal on a backpacking stove.  That was the only break for the night.

Needless to say - the next morning we awoke to find the following.

And so the adventure began -
